Generac announces plans to open new manufacturing facility in South Carolina

Generac Power Systems announced plans to open a new manufacturing, assembly and distribution operation in Trenton, South Carolina. The facility will support increased demand for home standby generators and associated energy technologies, and serve as a distribution center to customers in the southeast part of the United States, creating approximately 450 new jobs over the next two years.

New Pavilion wins approval for new solar panels ֠Dorset Echo

AN AMENDED planning application which includes solar panels on the roof of the new Pavilion on Dorchester’s Great Field, has been agreed.

The plans, submitted to Dorset Council, also asked for changes to the original design to allow for a bin store, the removal of one window, the addition of a kitchen window and alterations to doors.

The solar panels were not included in the original application for the building only being added to the structure after the initial consent was given.

The Pavilion has been built for the Alcohol Education Trust by C G Fry and Son, the original Poundbury developers, on Duchy of Cornwall land.

The building, which was given full planning permission last year, will provide a headquarters and a small café to serve visitors to the Great Field. The charity works with young people to make them aware of the problems of alcohol misuse.

C G Fry & Son said that Dorchester Town Council were consulted on the application by Dorset Council and had no objection welcoming of the  solar panels as a reflection of the Dorset Council declaration of a Climate Emergency.

It is hoped the building will be open for public use in the spring, subject to Government restrictions.

ForeFront Energy Will get Industrial Operation for Illinois Solar Challenge

ForeFront Power, a US-based developer of distributed solar and energy storage projects, has achieved commercial operation of the largest solar project in Kane County, Illinois.

With 7,384 panels, the 2.8 MW project supplies the Mooseheart Child City and School, a non-profit childcare facility for children and young people in need, with electricity. The project created more than 44 jobs during the construction and operation phases.

The project received incentives from the government’s Adjustable Block Program (ABP), established by the Future Energy Jobs Act to support the development of new photovoltaic distributed power generation and municipal solar projects in Illinois. While the program has successfully helped generate new clean electricity in the state, funds for the program have been depleted and need to be renewed in order for the state to see continued growth in the sector.

“Industries that create jobs in Illinois should stay in Illinois,” said Rep. Keith Wheeler of Illinois’ 50th District. “The Mooseheart solar project is evidence of the job creation engine that solar energy has developed in our state over the past few years as a result of the Future Energy Jobs Act. The Mooseheart Organization is a treasure trove of Fox Valley for a long list of reasons, and their leadership in building one of the largest solar projects in our area is just the latest example of why. “

Mooseheart’s solar project is a single ground-mounted project on a 1,000 acre campus located 38 miles west of Chicago. Aurora, Ill., Progressive Energy Group helped Mooseheart Child City and School procure this clean power agreement and oversaw the company from inception to completion. SolAmerica acted as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partner to ForeFront Power for the Mooseheart project.

Everybody Solar completes first half of solar portfolio for Kentucky center for at-risk children

Buckhorn Children & Family Services, a nonprofit organization in Eastern Kentucky that provides a sanctuary of health, healing and hope for at-risk children, youth and families throughout Kentucky, unveiled their new 10-kW solar installation provided by the nonprofit Everybody Solar, in partnership with MaxSolar, Mountain Association and HOMES, Inc. This installation is the first phase of the two-phased project. The nonprofit needs to raise an additional $32,262 to complete the project.

The new solar panels donated by MaxSolar, a provider of O&M, technical and asset management services for commercial solar PV systems, will save Buckhorn about $2,500 annually in electricity. The goal is to install additional panels, doubling the amount of solar generated and equaling 20.4 kW per year or over $145,000 in savings over 25 years. By installing the panels, Buckhorn hopes to use the savings to purchase needed bedding, blankets, basic hygiene kits and more for the children in their care.

“During these uncertain times with COVID-19 and the economy, we continue to explore ways to save money and increase services,” said Billy Smith, executive director at Buckhorn Children and Family Services. “Uncertainty increases the need for our services. The savings from solar energy will allow us to reach more children and families in need of healing.”

Buckhorn Children & Family Services serves children who have experienced severe abuse and neglect throughout Kentucky.

Not only will this solar installation increase the impact Buckhorn has on children and families in all 120 counties in Kentucky, but it also provides new job skills to former coal miners whose numbers have grown as coal production in Eastern Kentucky has dropped over the past decade. Through partner HOMES Inc, an organization that provides affordable and efficient housing solutions to distressed communities in Eastern Kentucky, former coal miners aided in the installation, providing them with new job skills in the energy sector, which has the highest job growth in the country.

And it would place solar customers into a complicated time-of-use rate structure and greatly under-value excess solar generation fed back to the utility, which would negatively impact Buckhorn’s ability to help children and families in need in Kentucky.”

For those unfamiliar with the technology behind solar, an inverter is the part of a solar energy system that converts the direct current (DC) power coming in through the rooftop panels into alternating current (AC), the kind of power supported by utility companies and used by household electronics. By adapting the incoming power, homeowners can generate their own electricity and even sell some back to the utility providers where permitted.

Thus far, Tesla, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, has been installing third-party inverters with its Solar Roof and Powerwall packages. Plus, this addition could potentially bring down the cost of the complete solar system by tapping into their already extensive charging station and EV power production capabilities.

Here’s what’s under the hood of Tesla’s latest offering:

Built on Powerwall 2 technology, two versions of the new inverter are available: a 3.8 kW type with two maximum power point trackers (MPPTs) and a 7.6 kW edition with four, with the latter being a huge bonus in systems where the solar modules are positioned on different parts of the roof and connected by several strings.

Linking with Wi-Fi, ethernet, and cellular connections, the inverter is capable of over-the-air updates, making it more adaptable than those offered by Tesla’s competitors. This creates the possibility of improved software over the device’s lifetime. It’s also designed to integrate with the Tesla mobile app for full user control and visibility, and with the Tesla Powerwall where applicable.

The product webpage asserts that the new inverter has a 97.5-percent efficiency rating. Unfortunately, it’s not made clear if that’s the maximum efficiency or the California Energy Commission’s weighted rating. If it’s the latter, the company’s inverter can beat out the Delta version with its 97 percent, but not SolarEdge’s 99 percent weighted efficiency (both inverters that Tesla has installed previously with its solar systems).

Safety

The new device is equipped with integrated rapid shutdown capabilities, as well as arc-fault ground protection. It meets all the US-required safety regulations.

Other Device Specifications

The new inverter can handle a broad range of temperatures from -22°F to 113°F (sorry Alaska and Arizona), and can be installed either inside or out. The box measures 26 inches tall by 16 inches wide and six inches deep, which is slightly thinner than many competitors.

Sungrow to ship 21 MWh DC-Coupled Solar Plus Storage System in Japan ֠Yahoo Finance

Solar parks in Japan had a high FiT rate but limited ability to sell the energy on the grid. A US research group is currently developing new inverters to protect solar systems from cyber attacks. The researchers also want to create new cybersecurity standards. Professor Alan Mantooth, the group’s research coordinator, said inverters can shut down if they are hacked, or add to grid instability and overcharge the batteries, while potentially creating problems we cannot yet solve.

The researchers also believe that a cyberattack on a storage-based solar system could destroy the storage system itself, which in turn could lead to a fire. “Dismantling or controlling solar PV farms would allow someone to disrupt critical functions in the same way as they would if there was a power outage,” said Mantooth.

Security standards

The most vulnerable inverters and solar systems are those that are connected to communication systems that are not blocked. “Some solar PV systems have dedicated fibers that are never connected to the public system, so they are more secure,” said Mantooth. “Others are easier to hack.”

Systems based on string inverters are not necessarily more vulnerable than systems based on central inverters, he claimed. “If the central inverter is weak, you are more vulnerable than if you have 10 string inverters that are strong. Hackers write code to ping the system and try to find the vulnerability, ”he said. “So they’re all going to ping them all anyway.”

However, Mantooth said it was safe to say that some products pose a higher risk than others. “One solar inverter manufacturer compared to another will be stronger than another,” he said. “There are no standards for this yet. So this is to be expected and should not be understood as a derogatory remark for the industry or the manufacturers of solar inverters. The researchers want to develop next-generation inverters, but are also considering the option of upgrading existing devices at an attractive cost. “However, given the lifespan of solar inverters in the field, an upgrade may become part of a replacement depending on how old the inverters are,” said Mantooth.
